1 – Midnight In Paris
My jaw was open half the time, like Owen Wilson's protagonist, experiencing the fantasy of hobnobbing with the 1920s Parisian socialites and recognising all their familiar idiosyncrasies.
2 – The Eagle
I was captivated with the atmospheric depiction of Roman Britain society, and felt engaged with the story of the two main characters, the Roman legion and his Celtic slave.
3 – The Help
No movie has ever made me sob five times in a single sitting.
4 – Water For Elephants
Inexplicably made me sob in the climactic finale, which took me completely by surprise. A beautiful romance film, well told by under-appreciated director Francis Lawrence.
5 – Crazy, Stupid, Love.
The very funny script, full of plot twists and surprising beats, makes full use of its interesting cast to deliver one of the most entertaining films of the year.
6 – Limitless
What a wonderful fantasy! More importantly, fully developed into a stylish movie with a constantly engaging plotline. Certainly left me wishing the intelligence-enhancement drug was real so that I could have it.
7 – X-Men: First Class
Partly because I worked on it and my name's on the credit.
Partly because the story and the cast was so damn good.
Partly because the story and the cast was so damn good.
8 – Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
Managed a respectable and epic dramatic film out of a movie about intelligent apes going on an uprising against humans.
9 – The Green Hornet
A fun, idiosyncratic film. Jay Chou as Kato is awesome and funny.
10 – The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Not as dark as one would expect, it's a densely-plotted suspense thriller that moves at a steady pace that is enjoyable precisely because of its complexity and pacing. Rooney Mara kicks bloody arse as the eponymous character.
